Ravenstone Castle

Ravenstone Castle is a large-scale Valheim fortress build created entirely using vanilla pieces and developer commands — no mods used. The project is currently around 50% complete and continues to expand as new areas of the castle are designed and built.

The castle is designed as a massive medieval-style stronghold, featuring towering walls, grand halls, and detailed courtyards meant to feel like a living fortress within the Valheim world. The build focuses on scale, symmetry, and atmosphere while staying within the limits of the base game.

Current Features

    • Large multi-tower fortress layout

    • Grand throne hall with ceremonial interior

    • Central courtyard with landscaping and gathering areas

    • Multiple interior rooms and chambers

    • Defensive walls and battlements

    • Decorative banners, armor displays, and lighting

    • Walkways, balconies, and elevated sections

    • Exterior gardens and courtyard spaces

Build Details

    • Game: Valheim

    • Mods: None

    • Build Tools: Developer commands only

    • Completion: ~50%

    • Style: Medieval / Fantasy Fortress

Project Vision

Ravenstone Castle is being built as a full fantasy citadel, with plans to expand the fortress with additional towers, interior halls, barracks, royal chambers, and defensive structures. The goal is to create one of the largest and most immersive vanilla Valheim castles possible.

Update on Ravenstone Castle 🏰

Hey everyone, big update on the build! This project started on Xbox and is now moving fully to PC. I've hit the limits of what my private server can handle. Even with fast RAM and all the optimizations, Valheim starts glitching hard because of how much detail I've packed into Ravenstone Castle. The game just can't keep up anymore.
So I'm in the process of transferring the entire world file over to a community server. This will give me way more space and room to breathe so I can finally finish the build the way I envision it. It will also allow other members to come in the future and see it firsthand once I open up access.
Stay tuned it's going to be epic once it's all moved over!

I like several details and ideas you have used in that build, and the sheer size is impressive. Kudos for the hard job and the good looking result. Eager to see it finished.

Said that, there's one thing that I don't like so much. Maybe is just a thing you haven't still finish it, or maybe. it also can be a byproduct of wanting to build so big that you needed to "speed up" things a bit. Point is, I find the main building outside too much repetitive. It's well built and decorated and has layers and so on; but at the same time it give more vibes of a modern aseptic building than a medievalish one as you wanted.

My suggestion is to add variety and non repetitive details; so every part of the facade will be its own without losing the look of the whole. Even if I don't build as big, I've some tricks I do to break that repetitive and plain sensation if I find them in my buildings:

- Add stone and black marble, instead of using only graustone. Those thick pieces are perfect for reinforcements in the base touching the ground and columns; they will give more sensation of robustness and visual variety.
- Damage some graustone pieces. The different textures of graustone when damaged can add detail in some situations that can look very nice
- Inlay regular wood and ashwood with the graustone wall; they will be visible from both sides of the walls , creating trims of color that can form decorative patterns
- Make the windows in the second floor follow a different pattern in their disposition than the ones in the first floor.
- Use banners, trophies or other objects to create unique non-repetitive decorations in a few places in the facades to break uniformity.
- Make every tower to have something unique to it: maybe a pointy roof in one instead of the plain one, maybe a spire, or a big crystal window in one of its sides, or a big watch (London Big Ben style)... whatever it suits you. medieval castles gave often names to their towers and that was because they were unique and there usually was a history behind. It's good to make them feel a little different of each other.

I know easier said than done, but I think your effort so far deserves that extra little punch to really nail it. You can start doing just small things here and there, look if they work for you and decide if you wanna go further.

Thank you, I really appreciate the thoughtful feedback and the kind words about the build. This project has definitely been a big undertaking and I’m glad people are enjoying it so far.

You’re absolutely right that the castle is still only about 50% complete, so a lot of the exterior detailing and variation is still planned for later stages. Right now I’ve mainly been focusing on establishing the overall structure and scale of the fortress first, and once that foundation is finished I’ll go back through and start adding more unique architectural details. When I originally started building it, I had plans for all sides of the castle and began laying things out around it. As I kept going, I ended up building more of a garden-style layout around the structure, and at one point I realized it was starting to feel more like a palace than a fortress. Because of that, I do plan on ripping some of that out and reworking the space to give it a more medieval garrison feel. My idea is to ground the inner towers with more functional spaces — something closer to an open market or activity area you’d see inside real castle walls, rather than purely decorative gardens.

I also really like some of the suggestions you mentioned, especially the ideas about breaking up the stone textures, adding banners or trophies, and giving the towers more unique identities. That’s something I’ve been thinking about as well — making each tower feel like it has its own character rather than everything being perfectly uniform.Building at this scale definitely slows down the detailing process, but I agree that those smaller touches are what will really bring the castle to life. I’ll definitely experiment with some of the techniques you suggested as the project continues.

Thanks again for taking the time to give such detailed feedback — it’s always great hearing ideas from other builders.

Nice to read you thought already on some of those points I mentioned. Such a build deserves to give it all, eager to see it finished.

About the fortress/palace thing; indeed currently it seems more a palace than a fortress. I think it's very hard to try to change it back to a fortress, you will have to sacrifice too much build and effort to shift that. IMHO, it would be wiser to leave it as a palace but "strengthening" the accesses; so there will increase the feeling of robustness that a fortress has.

The first way to do that is adding a defensive wall around the location, instead of a decorative fence. Fortified entrances and sentry towers, even if not very complicated, will give the place the look of something strong without touching the current buildings.

Also, lots of old castles and palaces were buildings that evolved during centuries. Wasn't strange for a modern palace with luxurious looks to be built over the base of an old sturdy defensive fortress. You can aim for that look adding stone and black marble walls in the lower floor, adding pillars and wider layers at the very base. Also less windows and smaller (more oriented to defense than illumination) in that lower floor.

Regarding the interior, if in the lower floor you add most of the "utility" rooms, like warehouses, workshops, barrack-like dormitories and so on; it would increase the sensation the lower part if for the servants and soldiers where the upper part will be the palace for the lord.

Easier said than done with a build already this big, but those are my two cents.
