How to Play Enigma Mode 2 in Valheim

A practical guide for installing and joining Enigma Mode worlds


Enigma Mode is a mechanics and progression overhaul for Valheim. You can think of it as New Game+. It adds new exploration logic, biome interactions, and world-level events while staying compatible with Vanilla Valheim clients.

One of the most common questions from new players is:
“How can a modded world work on Xbox or vanilla clients?”
This guide explains how Enigma Mode works with Valheim’s crossplay system and shows the correct installation method depending on your platform.


How Crossplay Compatibility Works


Enigma Mode is designed as a server-side modpack that utilizes Jere Kuusela's Expand World Prefabs.
This means the world itself contains the Enigma systems and logic, not the players’ game clients.

Because Valheim natively supports crossplay:
  • Xbox players
  • Mac players
  • Steam players
  • Playstation players (After PS Valheim launch)

…can all join the same world without any mods.

The fundamental rule is:

Only the host or server needs Enigma Mode installed.
Players who join that world do not.
This is why Enigma Mode can be played on both any Valheim client. If you own Valheim, you can play Enigma Mode.


How to Play Enigma Mode


There are two methods depending on your platform.

🟦 Method 1: Playing on Xbox or Other Crossplay Platforms

(No mods are installed locally)

If you are using a platform that cannot install BepInEx mods (Xbox, Mac, Playstation, etc.):

You do not install Enigma Mode yourself.

Instead, you join a world where Enigma Mode is installed on the server side.

How to play:
  1. Join a dedicated server or host computer that has Enigma Mode installed
  2. Select the world by using Valheim’s standard crossplay join menu
  3. Play normally. The Enigma systems run from the world/host
When the host world generates structures, triggers logic, or applies biome changes, your client simply displays those results.
You do not need any mod files.

🖥️ Method 2: Playing on PC (Steam, Modded)


(Install the modpack locally)

PC players using BepInEx can install Enigma Mode directly on their client.

This allows:
  • Hosting your own world
  • Playing Enigma Mode in singleplayer
  • Inviting friends who can join even if they are vanilla

How to install:
  1. Download the Enigma Mode modpack from Thunderstore
  2. Launch Valheim
  3. Create a new world or load an existing Enigma world
  4. Invite friends normally (Steam or Xbox)
Guests joining your world do not need any mods, regardless of platform.

Why Modded Worlds Are Playable on Vanilla Clients

Most confusion comes from the assumption that all mods modify the client.
Enigma Mode does not.

Here’s the explanation:

✔ Valheim syncs world data

The client renders whatever the host world generates.

✔ Enigma Mode operates on world logic

Features such as path generation, biome transitions, and world-level events come from the host.

✔ No custom assets

Enigma Mode uses prefabs and mechanics already included in Valheim through Expand World Prefabs, a server-side mod by Jere Kuusela that allows writing yaml scripts to create custom experiences using Vanilla assets.

✔ The server simulates behavior

The client just sees and interacts with the results.
Nothing extra is required on the player’s device.


When You MUST Use a Dedicated Server

If you are playing on:
  • Xbox
  • Playstation
  • Mac
  • A device that cannot mod the game
…then Enigma Mode needs to be installed on a modded dedicated server or PC host.
You cannot install Enigma Mode directly on those platforms.
You must join a server or friends world that has it installed.

Dedicated Server Setup (Crossplay)

  1. Install BepInEx on your Valheim dedicated server
  2. Install the Enigma Mode modpack on the server
  3. Start the server normally
  4. Share the join code or server IP
  5. Xbox/vanilla/PC players can join with no mods required
This is the recommended setup for mixed-platform groups.

Do Xbox players need to install mods?

No. They simply join a world where Enigma Mode is installed on the host.

Do all players need the mod?

Only the host/server needs it.
Everyone else plays normally.

Can I run Enigma in singleplayer?
