How to Fix an Old Valheim World for Deep North

Valheim worlds remember the places you have visited.

Normally, that is exactly what you want. Your buildings stay where you built them, the landscape keeps the changes you made, and the game does not rebuild the world every time you sail past it.

A major biome update changes that.

If you explored the Deep North before Valheim 1.0, parts of that biome may already be saved using the old world generation. Updating the game does not necessarily make every previously explored area behave like a fresh world. You can end up sailing north expecting the finished Deep North and finding old, incomplete, or strangely generated terrain instead.

You do not have to throw away the rest of your world to fix it.

Jere Kuusela’s Upgrade World mod can reset the explored Deep North areas so Valheim is allowed to generate them again. Your Meadows bases, roads, ports, storage halls, and the ridiculous tower somebody spent three weeks building can remain part of the same world.
Watch the video above if you want to see the entire process happen on screen. The written guide below contains the full basic method. At the end of the video, I also show how Infinity Hammer can be used to save important buildings before the reset.

Why Explored Deep North May Not Update

Valheim generates more of the world than the small area revealed on your minimap.

When a player visits somewhere, the game can generate zones hundreds of meters beyond the point they actually reached. This means an area may already be saved even if it still appears hidden beneath the map fog.

That generated information does not normally get discarded when Valheim receives an update. This protects existing worlds from being constantly rewritten, but it also means old biome generation can remain in places that now have new content.

So the usual advice “just avoid exploring the Deep North” mostly works, but it is not perfect. You may have generated more coastline than you realized while sailing nearby.

Upgrade World fixes the problem by making the affected Deep North zones ungenerated again. When those zones are visited after updating Valheim, the game treats them much more like unexplored territory and generates the current biome content.

What You Need

Before starting, download or bookmark these tools:
r2modman makes installing Valheim mods much easier. Create a Valheim profile, search for Upgrade World, and install it with its required dependencies.

Upgrade World only needs to be present while you perform the operation. You do not need to turn your old Valheim world into a permanently modded playthrough.

First: Back Up Your Valheim World

Do not skip this because the command looks simple.

Upgrade World changes the saved world directly. It includes automatic base detection, but any tool capable of removing and regenerating world zones deserves a backup. If you dislike the result, a real backup turns a disaster into a five-minute inconvenience.

From Valheim’s world-selection screen, open Manage Saves and create or restore a safe copy of the world. For extra safety, keep a copy outside the normal Valheim save folders as well.

If this is a dedicated server, stop the server completely before copying the world files.

Best Method: Reset the Deep North Before Updating Valheim

If you have not opened the world in the Deep North update yet, this is the cleanest path.
  1. Back up the world.
  2. Keep Valheim on the final pre-Deep-North version.
  3. Install Upgrade World through r2modman.
  4. Launch the game modded and load the world you want to repair.
  5. Press F5 to open the console.
  6. Enter the following command:
zones_reset biomes=DeepNorth force
The command prepares the Deep North upgrade operation. Most Upgrade World commands do not immediately execute, which gives you a chance to stop and confirm what you entered.

If you want to inspect the queued operation, use:
uw_check
When you are ready, enter:
start
Wait until Upgrade World reports that the operation has completed. Do not close Valheim halfway through because the console appears quiet for a moment.

Afterward, check any important northern bases or structures. Once you are satisfied:
  1. Leave the world normally.
  2. Remove or disable Upgrade World.
  3. Return Valheim to the current public version.
  4. Load the world and travel north.

The reset areas should now generate using the finished Deep North world generation.

What If You Already Updated to Valheim 1.0?

You may still be able to use the same process, but be careful with save-version compatibility.

Steam normally keeps the previous stable version available through Valheim’s Betas menu. Right-click Valheim in your Steam Library, open Properties, select Betas, and choose the previous stable or default_old branch if it is available.

What matters is the world save itself.

If the world was already opened and saved by a newer Valheim version, the older game version may refuse to load it. Use Manage Saves to restore a world backup from before the Deep North update, then perform the Upgrade World reset on that copy.

If you are doing this after release:
  1. Back up everything you currently have.
  2. Switch Valheim to the previous stable version.
  3. Restore the last world backup from before it was opened in Valheim 1.0, if necessary.
  4. Install Upgrade World.
  5. Run zones_reset biomes=DeepNorth force
  6. Use `start` when ready.
  7. Wait for it to finish, save, and then quit Valheim and remove the mod.
  8. In steam, Switch Valheim back to the current version.
  9. Now you can use the old world in Deep North and get the new biome

If Steam no longer offers the correct previous version, do not experiment on your only copy of the world. Keep the backup safe and check the current Upgrade World documentation for the supported migration path.

Will Upgrade World Delete My Base?

Upgrade World includes automatic player-base detection. By default, major player structures create protected areas that the operation tries to avoid.

That protection is intentionally conservative. Even a workbench or campfire can cause a substantial area around it to be skipped. This is good for keeping a base alive, but it can also leave a patch of old generation around a protected Deep North build.

That leaves you with a choice:
  • Protect the area and keep the building where it is.
  • Reset the whole area and allow the new Deep North to generate cleanly.
If you have something important built in the Deep North, watch the end of the video. I show how to save buildings with Infinity Hammer, reset the area, and preserve the build separately instead of gambling with it.

Do not use the force option unless you understand exactly what it changes. It disables player-base protection. That is useful when you deliberately want a completely clean reset, but it is also an efficient way to erase something you meant to keep.

Using Upgrade World on a Valheim Dedicated Server

For a dedicated server, Upgrade World should be installed on the server and on the admin client performing the command. The person running it must have administrator access.

Back up the server world while the server is stopped, start the server with the mod installed, connect with the admin client, and run the same commands from the F5 console.

Make sure the client and server are running matching Valheim versions during the operation. A current client cannot normally join a server left on the previous stable branch.

If you want to start a Valheim server or move an existing world onto one, you can rent one through DatHost using my link:

Common Questions

Do I need to start a new Valheim world for Deep North?

A fresh world is the simplest and safest way to receive every part of new world generation. However, Upgrade World gives players with long-running worlds another option. You can regenerate the affected Deep North areas while continuing to use the rest of your old world.

Does this reset my entire Valheim world?

No. The upgrade deepnorth or zones_reset biomes=DeepNorth operation targets the Deep North biome and nearby water areas. It is not the same as deleting the entire world.

Does explored mean revealed on the minimap?

Not exactly. Valheim generates farther around the player than the minimap visibly reveals, so some apparently hidden areas may already exist in the save.

Do I need to keep Upgrade World installed afterward?

No. Once the operation is complete and you have confirmed the world is safe, you can remove the mod and continue playing normally.

Can Xbox or crossplay players do this?

The world modification itself needs to be performed through a modded PC client or server with access to the save. After the repair is complete and the mod is removed, the world can return to its normal setup.

Keep the World while Replacing the Old North

A fresh Valheim world is exciting, but an old world has history.

It contains the first house that was supposed to be temporary, the road that took far too long to finish, the portal room that stopped making sense two updates ago.

You do not have to abandon all of that just because you sailed north too early.

Back up the world, reset the explored Deep North with Upgrade World, remove the mod, and let Valheim generate the finished biome when you return. If you have northern buildings worth saving, watch the end of the video before running the reset.

Then go north and see what was waiting under the old world data.
