Today, we will take a look at something deceptively simple: increasing the default size of chests and containers in Valheim using Expand World Prefabs (EWP). At first, this might seem like just a small quality-of-life change. But when you dig deeper, it opens up a bigger question. What if the real issue isn’t that players hoard too much, but rather that the base game’s storage has always been too limited?
There is often hesitation around expanding container sizes, based on the idea that it might disrupt game balance or make progression feel too easy. However, that concern disappears when you scale everything relative to one another. In this approach, we keep the progression ratios intact. Smaller chests still feel small compared to the larger ones, and upgrades still matter. The difference is that now, storage feels more practical and less restrictive.
In this walkthrough, we use EWP scripting to change container values across the game without requiring any client-side mods. Everything remains fully compatible with vanilla Valheim clients. That means Valheimers can drop into a world with smarter storage right away, no setup needed.
If you want to experience this directly, you can join Path of Magic, a public Valheim server where these expanded storage systems are already in use. All scripts demonstrated in the video are available in Jere’s Valheim World Editing Discord, where they are free for any Valheimer to use in their own world or project.
Sometimes the best improvements are the ones you don’t notice until the game suddenly feels smoother, your base more functional, and your time better spent. This is how we make the game breathe easier, one container at a time.
