Today, we will explore how Expand World Prefabs (EWP) can be used as a tool to practice game development inside Valheim. Instead of building standalone games, you can create new gameplay mechanics, events, and systems by using the assets and rules Valheim already provides, all scripted on the server side.

One major advantage of this approach is that if you attract some Valheimers interested in your creations, you can get playtesting feedback within days. This lets you gain significant experience testing a wide variety of game scenarios, all within the Valheim world you build. Rapid iteration based on real Valheimers’ input makes development more responsive and rewarding.
Learning to script with EWP takes a bit of time, but the good news is you barely need to know anything to get started. You can begin EWP scripting by knowing only about five percent of its full capabilities. There’s no need to master the system before jumping in. Start small, learn as you go, and enjoy the process. It’s a highly engaging and fulfilling way to gain a new level of control over the Valheim experience for your Valheimers and communities.

We’ll walk through examples of building custom enemy encounters, modifying progression, and designing dynamic worlds using only Valheim’s existing content. This approach makes game development accessible and exciting, especially for those already familiar with Valheim’s mechanics.
If you want to try these ideas yourself, join Path of Magic, a public Valheim server showcasing many EWP-powered systems and scripts. All tools and scripts used are publicly available through Jere’s Valheim World Editing Discord, so you can start creating your own unique game experiences inside Valheim.
