This is a major build of mine, and heavily inspired by Warhammer 40K & its gothic lore.
I am of course referring to the infamous Inquisition of the human Imperium.
Something about the dark grim chilling atmosphere of fear, suspicion & torment.
And the awesome memorable quotes from the 40K lore too.
Both deeply disturbing & seductive as inspiration for a major Valheim build.

Mythos wise, the Inquisition is a major faction in my fictional realm.
And this fortress is the main HQ for all Inquisitorial activities on the continent.
I had lots of fun with Gen AI, producing the various inscriptions & edicts for storyline fluff.
The Gateway building has the proclamation of the types of crimes in the Realm,
That falls under the oversight of the Inquisition to persecute & punish.
Watch further in the video to see the separate Trial Chambers for these crime categories.

Best of all, I found the perfect location on my continent for this notorious fortress prison.
Somewhere at the southern end of my continent lies a large tract of the Swamp biome.
This God-forsaken wasteland lies across a steep dark gorge, to my Meadows & Plains biome.
What a juxtaposition between sunshine-happy versus bleak-ominous areas.
And an excellent opportunity to incorporate a bridge design,
To span the transition across from light to dark, for poetic contrast.

So the basic bridge fortress blueprint was laid down & built a long time ago.
With a twin-tower entrance forward-bastion on the Meadows side.
And the main Inquisition building across the bridge on the Swamps side.
Where loyal servants walk across on the top side of the bridge, basking in the light.
And the accused & sinners walking under the bridgeway, in the sunless shadows.
I had decided on the Monolithic main spire design very early on.
Inspired by the LOTR Eye of Sauron tower & 40K Necron Monoliths.
It had to dominate (and oppress) the surrounding landscape by scale & proportions.
Topped by a 4-bonfire light tower to cast its stern baleful watch of vigilance.

The main choice of materials is Black Marble of course, to convey the forbidding ambience.
I had completed the basic design some time ago after Black Marble was made available.
But I never felt it whole back then, and so I left it built as it was.
Empty & awaiting more materials from future updates.
Then Ashlands came along & the new build pieces provided the perfect additions I needed to complete it.

I expanded the main Monolith block with an Annexe building behind.
Inspired by the Sanctuary of Las Lajas in Columbia (a church built across a bridge),
I wanted the end foci of connecting bridgeway to be small church.
Where you can imagine the condemned receiving last rites, from the priest on-site (Confessor; You can see his tiny room further in the video).
As you go further down the floors, the rest of the rooms such as
Tribunal chamber where charges are read & sentences are pronounced,
Trial chambers for the various types of offences,
Interrogation chambers, prison cells, and eventually
The punishment/execution yard outdoors, surrounded by the marshes.
* Minor visceral warning for viewers on that part later on in the video.
The rot, whispers & slow decay of the Swamps biome, seeps into everything (graphics & sound effects).
And lends a very fitting sombre ambience.
As well as the marshes being the final resting grounds for those made to repent & redeem.
By chance, there was already a small statue effigy in-game on the map,
Which looks suitably apt as some burial totem monument of sorts.

So far, I would consider this build to be best contender for my personal Magnum Opus to date.
Hopefully it would be surpassed by my future builds (Yes this will happen for sure, I just know it).

As usual, I'll leave the visuals to tell the story.
Especially the accompanying music, which really hit & made the feel for me.
Amazing cinematic music (credits in video description, for the royalty-free works of the gifted musicians).
Enjoy.

Haha, plenty of pagan heathen idolatry to persecute, if there ever was a Nordic Inquisition. 😄
