Finally! After more than 4 years building this city, the first gate in the fortified walls has been built.
The city will keep growing but not in this direction. So, I already build the final rampart in this zone and the city layout demanded a gate to be placed there.
The door structure is made with heavy looking stone walls and it's fully integrated in the rampart. It has a drawbridge with a dry moat and a portcullis to defend the passage. Guards can move through the upper part, so the continuity of the rampart isn't broken. In that upper side there's the mechanisms to operate the defenses, sentry windows from where to shoot enemies and some rest place and food for the guards. Down inside there's a small sentry to give shelter to the guard checking who enters the city.
As the terrain has a some slope, I depicted as if the drawbridge would have a slope too and now it would be in the process to be lowered/lifted. This allowed me to not have to alter the terrain too much (would had look ugly) and let me use 26º beams in the bridge structure. This trick prevents the core wood logs in the floor of the bridge to be damaged by the rain. Creatures can't enter the city but players can easily jump in or out.
Ironically, the gate is facing the very first outpost I ever built, so many years ago, in a copper-rich zone in the black forest. It's just visible at the limit of the render distance. Back in time, I did scary runs to transport copper towards my base, almost naked to maximize cargo; every one of them fell like too long to be a safe choice. 😨 Now the city has grow so much that the distance between the gate and where the city started is 3 times longer than between the gate and that outpost; i could easily build a road from the gate to there. 😆
I hope you like it
