I had decided to build some forts around my starting continent. At strategic locations.
It's a mentality I carried over from playing the Civilization series games. (I started from Civ 2 & onwards til Civ 6, haven't tried Civ 7 yet)
I would always explore my map for critical chokepoints to build cities or forts.
I'll showcase my map & planning at a much later point, after Deep North launches.
Anyways. These would be mainly Land forts, as opposed to my earlier builds for reinforced bridges & waterways etc.
But yes, I located them close to the sea.
So they would have some kind of docking facility for ships.
So this was the very first fort I built, back in the Hearth & Home update in late 2021.
It was primarily constructed with the materials back then, which was stone & wood.
And the layout is quite standard vanilla.
Square with 4 corner towers & a central tower.
Nothing really fancy, but I wanted to post this first for contrast. As my later designs would become more creative & non-vanilla.
After the subsequent updates with new build materials, I renovated this fort.
Some of the areas were reconstructed with new build pieces like Tar roofs & Grausten stone etc (the wharf was completely rebuilt this way).
What is somewhat cooler about this fort, was the fact that I built it over an existing crypt!
In my earlier days playing this game, it always seemed an compelling idea to build a fort over these underground structures.
It's just cool as some kind of fort bunker. Unfortunately, we are unable to build much inside the crypt (as of now).
As a side note, there were 2 existing structures nearby.
A small shack which I converted into a Rest house, along the road to the fort.
And a stone tower which I demolished & converted into a Boat builder's cabin with a boat ramp.
I like these little misc touches that use & re-purpose existing structures.
Anyways, enjoy the video.
